Surround SoundIf you want to really be drawn into a movie or tv show, you'll need to consider a surround sound system. Your typical stereo sound system has two channels, a left and a right channel. With stereo, the sound can appear to be coming from either side. With a surround sound system, instead of two audio channels, there are 3-7 channels, and some systems even have up to 10 channels, completely surrounding you with the sound of your favorite movie or audio CD.
With surround sound, movies will seem more realistic. You'll hear sounds that you didn't know were there. Personally, I know that just going from mono to stereo, I've heard a lot more in movies that I never heard before. Going from stereo to surround sound, will just increase the enjoyment of your favorite movie. Put in your favorite CD, and it will sound as if you were at a concert, except for the crowd. Even sporting events will sound better with surround sound, making it feel as if you were at the stadium.
5.1 is the most common surround sound system. It consists of 5 channels, a center speaker in the front of the room, right and left channels in the front and the back of the room, and a subwoofer (the .1 of 5.1). The five speakers surround you with sound, while the subwoofer picks up sound effects, such as an explosion or earthquake.
You can buy a surround sound system, which typically includes a DVD/CD player, and the necessary speakers. Simply plug the DVD player in, connect the speakers, and place them in their proper spots. A surround sound system doesn't have to be expensive, you can find a 5.1 system for around $100 and up. You could also put together your own system if you prefer, buying the DVD player, and all of the speakers separately. This can be a better option, since you can choose your own speakers, rather than just using the ones that come with a complete system.
Whichever option you choose for a surround sound system, you'll notice a huge difference in sound. Do yourself a favor, and buy yourself a surround sound system, and totally immerse yourself in the movie experience.
